Need three things: newly washed hair, blow dryer, and products. I use my curly mousse, this heat-activated curl spray, and hair spray. Work the mousse/ spray/ gel-- whatever your preferred product-- through the hair, from roots to tips.

After I put the mousse and spray in her hair, I blow dry until it is only damp and not dripping wet. Some parts are even completely dry...but overall, it is still fairly damp. (Braiding completely wet, thick hair won't work. You're just gonna wake up with wet, slightly wavy hair:)

(This is Niamh's pain for beauty face:)

I section off her hair into three parts. And french braid each section. The more sections you use, the tighter your crimps in the morning. Niamh will sit still for three sections. That is her limit:).

Braid all the way to the very bottom, until you can't manage to go any further. Use a little elastic band. Sometimes the bigger elastic bands roll out during the night. (Insert: 1/3 of hair not crimped. not a great look. know this from experience.)

It's such an easy way to have her hair 90% done in the morning. I can't wait to show you her pretty hair tomorrow:). Mermaid hair. I always imagine mermaids must have either super crimpy, long hair (not sure how this works out in an all-water environment:) or super long colorful hair. (yes, we believe in mermaids;) Due to my hair's frizzy nature, I choose the colorful option for myself. And I'm going to completely cheat:). Here are my new dreads:). SO PRETTY. And I got them curled this time. Just for some extra sweetness! Might have them installed soon:).

What kind of hair do you guys have??
Long, short, curly, frizzy, straight, silky???
Do you love your hair...or do you fight with it?
I've had a couple throw downs with mine...but all in all, I kinda like it. Frizzy mess and all:)!!

My hair is frizzy and to my shoulder blades. I wish I had longer hair like you guys but I can never seem to get mine to grow. :( I used to have really curly hair too, but the water here in Afghanistan is killing my hair. :/
ReplyDeleteHi Krist mine is more or less straight nd underneath my shoulder blades, the thing I hate the most is having to die the roots, (well I am 50 lol) wouldnt dare try dreads although Ilove them, they wouldnt let me go to work with them in. Cant wait to see the waves when your daughter gets up xxxx
ReplyDeleteMy hair is extremely thick, wavy and crazy! I try to embrace my waviness but it wants to fight me some days and look like a poofball. I love leaving braids in my hair after a shower to sleep on, actually I'm about to sleep on my braided hair now! I love how you call it mermaid hair, so perfect :)
ReplyDeleteOh I have to do this to Judes hair nearly every night...she has fine straight hair always wants it curly...well Hermione hair from Harry Potter is what she wishes for!! (She is Hermione obsessed just now..that's all she wants for christmas is Hermione stuff???) I once sat and did about 30 tiny pleats all through her hair one night, my fingers were aching!!
ReplyDeletehi krista.bet niamh`s hair is going to be lovely and crimped this morning.i have really poker straight hair and i can remember for my 10th birthday getting my long hair (which was all down my back then) crimped at the hairdressers for a treat.i also had my hair curled for my weddding day, 2 bottles of setting lotion and i had to sleep in the bendy rollers all night.lol.it was worth it though :D
ReplyDeletexx coops xx
I call my hair long short hair as it is short but not super short. I have fine hair but loads of it, so it is hard to stay in style without products....it is also dead straight without a single kink in it. I blow dry it and flick out the back for a just got out of bed look....that takes about 45 mins to style from wet.

I need to learn how to French braid. My hair is frizzy, thick, fine, wavy, curly, tangled, crazy & real long. I love the color of my hair, but I hate that it's curly/wavy. I want straight/smooth hair. I also want it to grow longer (it's just about to my waste. It just stops growing there). My daughter has my same curly, frizzy, crazy hair. She just had her 1st real haircut & she's 4. Her hair won't seem to grow. It curls up so much.
ReplyDeleteThis looks like it is going to be great fun for Niamh. My hair - very fine but lots of it with a mind of its own. Has to be kept short or there is a tornado & bird's nest all in one. Bob is out for it kinks where it shouldn't, even if you spend hours blow drying it straight. It requires a very skilled cut - that's the problem finding someone who can cut it properly & it has to be layered in the right places or it looks like I have twigs poking out everywhere. R is always ready with a comb to attempt the taming process prior to my setting foot outside the door. Had it skinhead short for a few years as I couldn't find anybody to handle the cutting but decided that for 50 it needed to be grown out; we're still working with it with the second hairdresser! Never been dyed - growing grey but fairish mousey with bits of strawberry & all kinds of odd colours in it. Hmmmm - didn't intend writing a hair story.

I have super thick hair. You are so correct, you braid all that and you just wake up with damp wavy hair! If I pull my hair up it will stay wet for 3 days (yes I have tried this...curiousity got to me). I LOVE the colors in your new dreads....how cool are those!! Beautiful!
ReplyDeleteTracy Valure
looks like it will be lovely! i've never been able to grow my hair very long...so i'm envious of your little one's locks. after picks? :)
ReplyDeleteHair is always a sore subject in my life! I've battled with it for ages mainly because I have no clue on how to take care of it/style it/dye it. BOO!
ReplyDeleteAfter totally killing my hair with peroxide, I've been trying to grow my hair forever. Its finally getting healthy and growing now that I'm pregnant... but not looking forward to it falling out again after I give birth. :( It's a vicious cycle.
I love your dreads... so colourful! Can't wait to see them installed.
Ohh getting Beth ti sit ti put a simple plait in her hair each morning kills me!!! Might give this a go on Ellie. Can't wait to see the result!

Hi sweetie I have the crimpy things to do this to Natalies hair as she pulls the plaits out....yes she is a tinker. Her hair is the same as mine thick, very long to the bottom of our backs & very strong. Which when curling is NOT a good thing as it takes a lot of work to keep the curls in but cus of the colour & length looks sooooo good when it is done Natalie just looks even more pretty with hers done altho doing hers does take me over 4 hours.....its not like I can tell her to keep her head still & working with her in a wheelchair can makes things erm....challenging lol. I love hair tho & most days its my most important thing about me whether I straighten it (its straight anyway but I do it for the glossy look, you know what I mean lol)
ReplyDeleteCertain hairstyles make me feel sexy if I'm being honest lol......it m akes hubster smile anyhoo lol.
Look forward to seeing Niamh's hair tomorrow hun
Lotsa hugs Vicky xxx
i just did this to my hair last night! except it didn't turn out very well...i think i should have used some product. whoops. :)
ReplyDeletei love your hair posts - the colorful ones are so cool! as for my hair, it has a mind of it's own. ha!
ReplyDeleteI have curly hair that frizzes in the mist or rain... have tried to embrace it for what seems my whole life. If it's hot and damp it frizzes. I have yet to find a product that will tame it. It's a flippin' pain blow-drying it, but hey what one will do for beauty! Have so enjoyed reading everyone's comments.... so nice to know I'm not alone!!! hugs Sharon
ReplyDeleteI used to dye my hair every week when I was around 16 or 17. from black to blonde to black and then of course all kinds of colors inbetween, green, blue, purple, red.. my hair didn't thank me for it in the end and it felt completely dead by the time I was 18. Since then I've been letting my hair grow and grow and grow and have long and healthy hair by now. I love putting it up in cute buns on my head or braid it, somany possibilities, love it!
ReplyDeleteOMG my mother used to do this to me when I was little (and I'm now older than you !!!) LOL (although only a bit, honest LOL!!!) I can't wait to see the 'after' pics !!! Fab.
ReplyDeleteThis will be gorgeous, I havent done this plait since my eldest finished highland dancing. We used to have to get up very early to get ready for dance competitions, I used to be doing french plaits at 6 in the morning!
ReplyDeleteI hate my hair, its so thick and frizzy, takes ages to dry, constantly needs dying!!
Looking forward to your pictures tomorrow,
Love and hugs Kat xx
I'm a frizz head and I love. Sometimes my hair and I take a break and I get braided extensions. But overall, we're in love :)
ReplyDeleteI've tried this with Willow and Faith, it works great with Willow - she has thick, naturally wavy hair anyway, but Faith's hair is so fine and poker straight that I very rarely get the braids to stay in all night.
ReplyDeleteMy hair is half way between the 2 extremes of the girls, not thick, not fine but I have loads of hair, its not straight and not wavy/curly but it has a definite kink in it - some say my personality has a kink in it too lol

I have super interesting hair lol, it is ridiculously thin but coarse and won't grow too much past my shoulder blades... used to curl now it kinda waves/frizzes... really it ain't pretty! I use a curling iron every day or my straightener lol. Can't wait to see the finished product! :)
ReplyDelete-Meesh :)
My hair has just been cut from shoulder length to a shortish bob, and I'm not sure I like it or not. There could be a repeat trip to the hairdressers soon and we will go even shorter! However, my daughters hair is (in my opinion!) gorgeous. She has a bottom of ear bob, as she is not a long hair girl. She has her dads' colouring (lovely shade of strawberry blond almost red in places) but unfortunately she got my fine wispy texture. We tried putting hair things in, but no good they fall out almost immediately. So off to the hairdressers we trotted and now everyone is very pleased with it!
ReplyDeleteAm off now to look at the after pictures. Sarah

ReplyDeleteLong and Frizzy! I've considered getting Keratin straightening done but its so expensive. I guess I'll just have to embrace big hair :)
ReplyDeleteHi Krista!!
ReplyDeleteI'm from Brazil, and this is my first comment here!!
I love your posts and illustrations!!!
I have a superlong curly red hair, and I love it, maybe I am a brazillian mermaid???? :)
But here, some people think only straight hair are beautiful, so we don't have much products por curly hair, or they are too expensive!!
